Music Therapy

Music therapy helps facilitate positive changes in behaviour, health and wellbeing, for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Individualised programs are developed for care recipients and their carers, and may involve one to one sessions or group sessions. Please note that you do not need any prior music experience to participate in music therapy.

A session may include for example playing instruments, singing, listening to music, song writing, movement to music, musical improvisation, music assisted relaxation and more, depending on each individual’s needs and goals.

Music therapy can help with expressing and regulating emotions, speech and communication, social skill development, memory and concentration, movement and coordination, and more.

The registered music therapist at Carers NT is university trained, and registered with the Australian Music Therapy Association.

This program was nominated in the Northern Territory Disability Awards and achieved the Excellence in Innovation Award in 2016.
